Antique Japanese Hikeshi Banten Fireman’s Coat in Indigo Sashiko Cotton
● Acquired
Details
Size: Approximately 47 inches cuff to cuff, 22 inches across the body, and 35 inches long
Japan · Circa 1900, late Meiji period · Cotton
Dense rows of sashiko stitching cover the indigo cotton of this Japanese fireman’s coat, or hikeshi banten. A large faded brigade insignia and geometric resist-dyed design fill the back.
The collar still carries its identifying markings, and the original ties are in place. Inside, the coat is mostly indigo, with the stitching fully visible and parts of the geometric pattern continuing along the inner front.
The close rows of stitches run right through the cotton, and the resist-dyed pattern changes from the sleeves to the back.
