Details
Size: Approximately 12 by 39 inches (30.5 by 99.1 cm)
Japan · Circa 1900, late Meiji period · Cotton
This Japanese boro panel has been kept in use through layer upon layer of cotton patching and hand mending. Old repairs and reinforcements are part of the fabric’s working history, giving the piece a character shaped by continued use.
Different cotton weaves meet throughout the panel, with sections of heavy wear alongside more closely woven cloth. The overlapping layers and hand stitching reveal how the material was pieced together and cared for over time.
