Vintage Hirokazu Mizushima Bronze Sculpture of Two Lounging Deer
● Acquired
Details
Vintage Japanese bronze figurine of two lounging deer by acclaimed Japanese artist Hirokazu Mizushima 水島弘一 (1907–1982).
Working out of Kaseyama, Japan near Nara, where wild deer have roamed temple grounds for centuries, Mizushima likely drew directly on his local surroundings for this piece. The sculpture is cast using the traditional lost-wax technique, capturing fine detail up top while leaving the bronze hollow with a raw, open underside. The result cleanly bridges classical Japanese heritage with a mid-century sculptural form.
