Antique Japanese Wa-Sarasa Cotton Panel with Phoenixes

Details
Size: Approximately 6.75 by 37 inches (17.1 by 94 cm)
Japan · 19th century, Edo period · Cotton
Phoenixes repeat among scrolling leaves and rounded flowers on this Japanese wa-sarasa panel. Rust-red, brown, cream, and natural tones make up the pattern.
The birds are hō-ō, an auspicious motif associated with prosperity and good fortune in Japanese decorative arts. Wa-sarasa developed as Japanese dyers adapted imported patterned cotton traditions.
The reverse shows a softer impression of the same design, with the birds and foliage still visible.
