Size: Approximately 51 × 48 inches (129.5 × 121.9 cm)
Japan · Late Meiji period · Hand-pieced indigo cotton
A substantial antique Japanese boro textile dating to the latter part of the Meiji period (1868–1912), assembled from layers of indigo-dyed cotton, with extensive hand-stitched patchwork, sashiko repairs, and fabrics in varying shades of blue. Measuring approximately 17 square feet, this piece brings together a remarkable amount of traditional Japanese textile handwork.
Boro developed through the practice of repairing, reinforcing, and reusing cloth over generations. Rather than discarding worn fabrics, pieces of cotton were layered and stitched together, extending their useful lives. The resulting textiles preserve a history of everyday life, resourcefulness, and Japanese folk craft.
Both faces of this piece offer a different perspective on that history. One features an extensive arrangement of overlapping indigo cotton patches, including solids, stripes, and checks. The other reveals older layers, extensive wear, exposed stitching, and the accumulated repairs beneath the surface.
With its generous dimensions and richly layered construction, this is a distinctive piece for collectors of Japanese heritage textiles, folk art, and traditional handwork. Its scale also makes it particularly well suited to textile mounting or wall display.
